What is xylitol?

Xylitol is an all natural sweetener that looks and tastes like sugar. It is found naturally in many fruits and vegetables, including corn cobs, mushrooms, raspberries, and Birch trees. Xylitol has the same sweetness as sugar but with 40% fewer calories. It is approved in the US by the FDA in unlimited quantities. It is found most commonly in chewing gums, candies, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and nasal sprays.

What are the benefits of xylitol?

There are quite a few health benefits to using xylitol instead of sugar. First, xylitol is safe for diabetics. It is absorbed more slowly than sugar, and has much less impact on blood sugar levels. Second, xylitol promotes healthy teeth. Rather than aiding tooth decay like sugar, xylitol prevents bacteria from adhering to the teeth. Likewise, xylitol has been shown to prevent bacteria such as Streptococcus and others from adhering to membranes, thus helping to prevent infection. Third, xylitol has 40% fewer calories than sugar and no aftertaste. Fourth, xylitol is a natural rather than artificial sweetener. Because it is naturally produced in the body (up to 15 grams per day), it is a safe alternative to sugar.
